Why must I sign the ballot?

The law specifically states that in order to count, all assessment ballots be completed and signed by the record property owner of the parcel(s) identified on this ballot or by the owner’s authorized representative and must be received by the Ballot Tabulator before the close of the public testimony portion of the Public Hearing. Unsigned ballots cannot be counted. (Article XIIID of the California Constitution and the Government Code)

How do we know the ballots will be tabulated correctly?

The ballots are being mailed by property owners directly to the League of Women Voters in La Mesa, which will maintain custody of the unopened ballot envelopes throughout the balloting period. After the close of the balloting period, the envelopes will be opened and the ballots will be tabulated by the League of Women Voters, which has no financial or other interest in the outcome of the Measure. Any members of the public who wish to observe the tabulation process are welcome to do so.

After the tabulation the ballots will be stored by a document storage company and will not be accessible to the District or anyone else unless a recount is required or there is some other legal requirement for unsealing the box of ballots.
